A Message to Parents and Educators

Social and emotional development has a fundamental impact in early childhood. Managing emotions, resolving conflicts positively, and making responsible decisions are some of the many benefits children gain. In Alone Bird: A Story About Autism, Tilly Bird is a student with autism. She experiences a few highs and lows throughout her school day. Tilly’s classmates and teacher learn about autism spectrum disorders (ASD), kindness, and inclusion.

As you read this story with your child, some conversations to explore are inclusiveness, difficulties fitting in with others, and acts of kindness. It would also be helpful for your child to put themself in Tilly Bird’s shoes. Ask, “what is your idea of the perfect school day?”
